Faroese Shawl Patterns - Knitted Lace

Knitted lace Faroese shawl patterns are designed to knit from the neck down and are shaped to fit naturally around the shoulders.  Wear any of these shawls with grace with hardly a tug to keep it on your shoulders.

All-Over Lace Faroese Shawl - #A16

Another of the popular HeartStrings Faroese shaped shawls.  This shawl is in an all-over stockinette stitch lace version featuring lace heart motifs.  Want a shawl that will stay on your shoulders?  This Faroese shaped shawl is for you.

Knitting starts with just a few stitches at the top and works downward.  The size is easily adjusted by knitting to length desired, and other weights of yarn with corresponding adjustment in needle size and yardage.

Sized at 32" long and 48" at widest point as worn.  Yarn requirements are 1200 yards fingering or jumper weight yarn as preferred, 4 sts./in., size 8 U.S./5.0 mm needles suggested.

Just two skeins of Serenity with generous yardage of 700 yds./8 oz. skein would make a nice shawl.

Cascading Hearts Shawl - #A2

Knit HeartStrings Cascading Hearts Shawl for someone special or as a special treat for yourself.

The shawl is adapted from the Faroese style and is  shaped to fit naturally around the neck.

The pattern starts with the center back neckband and proceeds from the neck down with necessary shaping increases.  The panels and garter stitch bands are further enhanced by Jackie's method of increases that results in the appearance of a "fake" decrease line.

Sizing - One size depending on weight of yarn used.  See sample cover page below for dimensions.

Yarn and Needles - Approximately 1075 yds. in a laceweight or a jumper weight yarn.  Sz. 8 circular needle or size to obtain planned gauge, in 24"-28" length.  Note:  the circular needle is recommended to hold the shawl comfortably while knitting.  It is not knit in the round.

Gauge in stockinette stitch and after blocking:

  • Laceweight - 8 sts. and 15 rows per 2 inches

  • Jumper weight - 7-1/2 sts. and 12 rows per 2 inches

Pendants Shawl - #A4

Easy and Faroese-shaped.  Oxymoron?  No!  The skill level for this lovely shawl is advanced beginner knitter with some experience reading stitch pattern charts.  If you've  never knitted from a chart, I encourage you to let this be the time.  You will enjoy having your eyes more on your knitting than on the pattern!

The garter stitch knitted lace of assorted jewel-like shaped lace motifs, yarn over increases and some of the yarn overs in the lace motifs are used to shape the panels and pretty lace shoulders.

One size - 33" long and 46" at widest point as worn, 1200 yards fingering or jumper weight yarn as preferred, 4 sts./inch, size 8 U.S./5.0 mm suggested. Start knitting with just a few stitches at the top and work downward.  Size is adjustable with change in yarn and corresponding change in needle size and yardage.

Two skeins of Serenity yields 1400 yards and a nice hand and drape for a shawl.

Troika Wrap-Around Shawl - #A41

A wonderfully simple and fun shawl that is shaped like a giant butterfly.  Knit in a "3-ball" garter stitch technique from the top-down, this is a great pattern for using a mix of novelty and "stash" yarns.  Shaping is done with simple yarn overs, and creates the traditional Faroese-style shawl with center back panel, side front panels, and shaped shoulders.  The elongated front panels allow you to wear this shawl in lots of ways, including tied around the back.  The shawl gets wider the longer you make it.  For a shawl in 34" length, you will need approximately 600 yards of each of three different yarns (or combination of yarns) in sport to worsted-weight.  A nice combination of textures is recommended such as yarns from the Heritage collection shown below.  Each of the three yarns are knit for one row each in garter stitch, then repeated, thus giving you lots of color and textural interaction.  Size 10 and 10-1/2 circular needles in 29" - 32" lengths or size to produce a supple fabric in garter stitch in your chosen yarns are recommended.

I knit an extra long, dramatic Troika as I had the yarn.  (-:  It required a skein of Serenity in Atlantic Moonglow, 3 skeins of cotton/metallic and a skein of gray mohair that followed me home from Convergence in Atlanta.
