The stitch-pattern of this
beautiful, simple lace shawl is a variation of Shetland feather and fan.
Waves created by the pattern-stitch and movement of variegated color make
this shawl look much more difficult than it is. And, for moral
support, there is online help at the
Elegantly
Simple Triangle Shawl Knitalong blog.
Starting at the lower point
of the shawl and increasing to as wide as you want, it becomes a lovely
fan-shaped neck scarf or shoulder wrap with scalloped points at the upper
edge. A very fine yarn is recommended. Yardage required varies
from 200 yards for a neck scarf of 32" at the widest point to 1000
yards for a larger wrap of 72". Size 5 U.S. (3.75 mm) needles
are recommended. Gauge = 6 stitches per inch over pattern stitch but
not critical with a shawl.
The pattern is easily adaptable to
any yarn in any size. Just choose your yarn and appropriate needle size to
give a pleasingly open fabric, and knit to length desired. This shawl may be worn in
a number of ways including point down in the back or "upside
down" using the point of the shawl to make a nice collar.
Version shown
on the left was knit with one skein of
Cloud 9 in
the
Bird of Paradise
colorway. This yarn is ideal for you if you
want the stretch of wool, cool hand of cotton and sheen and drape of
rayon.
