Wash Away Shipping Costs Blues

May 10, 2007

Hello friends,

It has been a while since I've had time to write a note to let you know what's going on here at Heritage Yarns.  Hope this finds you actively pursuing the fiber arts you love as I am trying to find time to pursue mine.  Currently on the needles is HeartStrings Lead or Follow Lace Scarf in Jaggerspun Zephyr 2/18 silk/merino and on the loom, a silk/rayon warp for a cocoon jacket.  Now, to have time to throw that first pick.  <g>

On to the news.

Dyeing for your knitting and weaving pleasure,

Margaret <><

Rise in Shipping Prices/Gift with Purchase

Shipping costs are going up on May 14 and it seems to affect everything including cost of goods as shipping goes up for merchants too!

Take advantage of lower, current shipping prices by placing orders before the change takes place.

In addition to shipping savings, with orders of $20 or more, I will include a 4 oz. bottle of Synthrapol detergent, a $3 value with no additional shipping.  In order to ship prior to May 14, I will need your order by May 12.

Lots of new things here at Heritage Yarns so, take advantage of this offer through May 12, 2007.  (Sale bin items do not apply.)

What's New in Colorways

These are the newest colorways available in Heritage yarns.  Some are in very limited quantity but thought you would like to take a peek.

Bird of Paradise is a colorway in America the Beautiful Collection.     Heart and Soul is a colorway in the Romantic Collection.     Smoky Places is a colorway in the Romantic Collection.     Wildwood Flower is a colorway in America the Beautiful Collection.

Shown from left:  Bird of Paradise, Heart and Soul, Smoky Places and Wildwood Flower

Bird of Paradise, once available in 8/2 Tencel painted warps only, is now available in 8/2 Tencel hand painted skeins.  This yarn is equally suited for knitting and weaving.

Heart and Soul is new and available in 8/2 Tencel only.  The shifts in color are so close that they are not easily discernible except in the sunlight, making them perfect for lace knitting and pattern weaving.  Expect to see equal amounts of true red and deep fuchsia in this colorway.

Smoky Places was named by Don, my husband.  Unlike the song for which it was named, Smoky Places is well-suited for the most conservative attire including black-tie affairs.  There are occasionally hints of blue and eggplant, making this a colorway with intrigue.  It is currently available in Serenity cotton/rayon.

Wildwood Flower was retired for a while and was a favorite of mine as I love jewel tones as I have found 90% of the world does. <g> It's currently available in 8/2 Tencel.

What's New in Yarns

If you've not worked with Jaggerspun Zephyr silk/merino, you're in for a treat.  2/18 is currently available in 8 colors with hopes of adding more in the future.  The put-up is on 1.4 oz./500 yd. skeins, an ample amount for most lace scarves.  The price has been kept low so that you can knit several scarves.  Jaggerspun Zephyr 4/8 is available in two colors, Garnet and Lady Slipper, and was put up on 3.2 oz./200 yd. skeins.

Do you prefer a warping board or mill?  Do you use a temple?

These questions were asked on one of the weaving lists recently and I hope this can be of some help to some newsletter subscribers who are not members.

I prefer a warping board as does at least one master weaver and another production weaver I know.  They both have their place.  If you have nowhere to mount a warping board, then a mill might be the answer.  It has its advantages and disadvantages.  For long warps with very little color change or for limited physical space, they are very good.  You might consider a door frame with removable dowels if you have limited space.  Just don't wind a warp over a door that you will need to enter or exit.  lol.  When you've finished winding the warp, remove the dowels from the door frame.  Be sure the dowels are of maple or oak or they will bend and break.  Ask me how I know.  (-:  If you can't do that, you might consider warping pegs as they are portable and inexpensive.  These are good for short warps.

The "tickets" to good selvages:

Keep your weaving space midway between the breast beam and beater - known as the "sweet spot."  It's where you get the best shed.  Only weave for about an inch and advance your warp often.  Don't try to get your money's worth from an advance of the warp by weaving as close as you can to the breast beam and as close as you can to the beater.  Your selvages will show it when you take your warp off the loom.  And here is the reason why:  the arc of the weft is different at the breast beam than it is at the beater.  So, narrow the space in which you weave.

And do not fool with the selvages as you weave.  It will loosen the tension on your selvages so that when you take it off the loom, the selvages will "wave" lengthwise.

Strive for an even beat.  Get in a rhythm with throwing and beating.  When you get up from the loom, loosen your tension and tighten when you return to weave - unless you are going to come back in a few hours.  Even then, when you sit down to weave, beat before you throw your next pick as the pick will have "traveled" ever so slightly toward the breast beam so that when you hold your weaving up to the light, the beat will be uneven - even after washing.

Don't overload your bobbins as it puts pressure on the selvages.  Throw evenly and, again, with rhythm.  You will always have one selvage that is not as good as the other.  It's universal as most of us are no ambidextrous.

I'm sure there is a place for temples; I've just not figured out where is - maybe for a rug.

What customers are saying about Heritage Yarns:

I received your package last night.  I can't tell you how delighted I am.  I had had an all day, very boring, meeting yesterday and felt exhausted.  I came home and my world changed when I saw your yarns and all the fun I was going to have.  My husband was amazed at the richness of color and can't wait to see the results of my projects.  Your yarns are truly beautiful!  Marie
