Lace Scarf Knitting
Patterns - Rectangular
Rectangular-shaped
HeartStrings scarf knitting patterns that are designed for the beginner
and the experienced knitter.
From the traditional to the
not-so-traditional. Let it be your choice with different weights,
textures and variegated yarns.
Recommended
yarn weights for the lace scarf
knitting patterns are marked with a red
letter. Gauge is not extremely important with a scarf so, try
different weights for a one-of-a-kind scarf.

Cat's
Cradle Long-Ways Scarf - #A21
Heritage Yarns' long color repeats
are ideal for this scarf as it is cast-on lengthwise causing color to
travel the length of the scarf. The clustered pattern stitch
and eyelet stripe sections which
frame and divide the cat's cradle areas further emphasize the length-wise
color placement. Included with the pattern are blocking directions that
can be used for this and other lace scarves.
Size 5
U.S. (3.75 mm) needles
suggested. Allow 450 yards of yarn for blocked measurements of 6½"
by 70". As a bonus, the pattern includes instructions for
adjustment in size. Keep in mind that yardage needed will
vary if you choose to adjust the size.
The model is shown in Heritage Yarns
Summer Haze
hand
painted 8/2 tencel, a laceweight
yarn with high sheen and wonderful drape. A fingering weight
such as Serenity or Cloud 9
would be nice for a little heavier scarf.

Colorful
Splendor Scarf - #H41
Although the colors of the model suggest the fall season, any season's
colors would look equally as stunning.
Hand painted, variegated yarn
enhances the bias movement of the stockinette-based lace in this very
simple scarf.
A dainty scalloped edging begins and ends the scarf. The outer border is
knit as-you-go in a textured garter-based lace that sets off the main
area with a visual mixing of colors.
Allow 325 yards of laceweight yarn for blocked measurements of
8" x 58" scarf. Length and width are easily adjusted. Keep
yardage in mind when adjusting the size. The Heritage yarns listed
below have more than enough yardage for two-three scarves or adjust the
width for a shawl with a nice drape and sheen that the tencel and rayon
content provide. Suggested gauge is an average of 7 stitches/inch over
combination of border and main patterns, size U.S. 5 / 3.75 mm needles.
But, like most scarves, gauge is not extremely important as long as you
are pleased with the fabric. The pattern includes charted and
written stitch instructions.

Crest of the Wave Lace Scarf - #A20
The
main pattern stitch of this simple scarf is a derivative of the Shetland
lace stitch 'Feather and Fan' or 'Old Shale.' Appropriately named
as waves sweep across the mid-portion of the scarf with a knit-as-you-go
lacy border. Catch the wave with a variegated blue and green
colorway such as
Blue Bayou or
Sea Cruise.
The
pattern calls for approximately 500 yards or 2-2-1/2 oz. (55-70g) of
fine
yarn for blocked measurements of 14" by 68". Knit with size 6 U.S.
(4.0 mm) needles. Gauge is an average of 4-1/2 stitches per inch
over combination of border and main patterns after blocking under
tension. This would be a great project for a wide range of
yarn weights and fibers including the yarns listed below and
others. This is one of those easy-to-knit patterns you have been
looking for.
Although slightly
textured,
Cloud 9
is a very good choice. The fiber content
is 50% cotton/50% rayon which gives the yarn a nice, soft hand
and wonderful drape. This yarn also has just a little
stretch which makes it very nice to knit.

Lacy
Serpentine Scarf - #A62
This
scarf is knit along its length so that the colors run lengthwise.
Atlantic
Moonglow, a Heritage Yarns colorway whose values are close and
repeats long, will show off this pattern to its greatest advantage and may
even resemble an ocean wave.
The main
stitch pattern has only three different patterned rows so it is easily
memorized and a joy to knit.
Allow approximately 350
yards or 1-1/2-2 oz. (40-60g) of fine yarn in the range of 25 to 30 wraps
per inch for finished blocked measurements of 9" by 71".
Suggested needle size is 4 U.S. (3.5 mm). Gauge = 4-1/4 sts. and 8
rows per inch over lace pattern after blocking under tension. The
scarf size is easily adjusted by working more or less stitch and row
repeats of the main lace pattern. Yardage is high on all of the
suggested yarns. Knit one for yourself and one for a friend!

Reversible
Lace Cables Scarf - #A7
An
elegant but simple lightweight dressy scarf. The main pattern stitch
is a mock eyelet cable, surrounded by a border of garter stitch and
herringbone lace.
|
|
Approximate gauge
for the pattern is 4-3/4 st./in. on a size 6
U.S. needle for a finished size of approximately 10" x
72". The pattern calls for400-500 yds. of laceweight
or fingering weight yarn. Adjust yardage for a scarf of
different dimensions.
The scarf top/left was knitted by Jackie
E-S in
Sagebrush
silk/rayon that is no longer available.
Sagebrush
is still available in other yarns equally as nice
such as
Cloud 9.
I knit the second
scarf in
Atlantic Moonglow Cloud 9 and enjoyed the tracking of color
achieved.
The
knitting gauge of
Cloud
9 is similar as the silk/rayon with just a light
texture. The equal content of cotton and rayon make this a
very nice yarn. The hand of the cotton is quite soft with
the added benefit of drape and sheen from the rayon. I think
you will like the slight stretch as it is easy on the hands while
knitting.

Reversible
Lace Ladders - #A37
Looking
for a simple, fast scarf to knit for a gift? Look no
more! This rectangular scarf is reversible and calls for
only a small quantity of yard for a shorter ascot-styled neck
scarf.
Only 200 yards
of laceweight or fingering yarn are required for this
pattern! Blocked measurements are approximately 8" x 44"
on a size 5 U.S./3.75mm needle.
The pattern is easily adapted to
make the style of scarf you want such as the shorter ascot-style shown, a longer fashion scarf, a narrow sash, or wider stole style.
One
skein of hand painted
tencel would make a nice stole! If you would like
a little more drape, consider doubling with
mill
dyed tencel or knitting Reversible Lace Ladders
with
Serenity,
a fingering weight yarn with a delightful hand and drape.
