Gallery of Handwovens - Heritage Yarns

Handwoven scarves by Margaret Pittman are woven on painted warps and are combinations of silk, rayon, cotton &and tencel yarns specially chosen for luxurious qualities.

These scarves will be offered periodically and in different sizes.  Some may even be surface-designed if time allows.  Each scarf is hand painted and handwoven on short (one to two scarves), non-production warps.  However, there will be repeats in the colorways so, you may see similar scarves again.

Rose Garden painted warp, handwoven cotton/rayon scarf

This twill scarf was handwoven on a hand painted warp in the Rose Garden colorway with grayed teal weft.  One can almost smell the rose fragrance in these colors!   The warp is 50% pre-mercerized cotton/50% rayon chainette; weft is 100% tencel.  The fringe is hand twisted.  Size is approximately 7-1/4" wide X 55" long plus 7" hand-twisted fringe on each end for a total length of 69".  This is a shorter suit scarf with lots of drape.  Hand wash in cool water, line dry, press with a warm iron.

Day's End hand painted warp, handwoven cotton/rayon scarf     Day's End hand painted cotton/rayon weaving warp

Shown from left:  Scarf and warp in Day's End

The colors in this Day's End scarf are just as the name indicates with a midnight blue, eggplant, red orange and hint of gold as the sun goes down.  The picture does not show the depth of color of the scarf so, I've included a warp to give you a better feel of the color.

This twill scarf was hand woven on a hand painted warp in the Day's End colorway with navy weft.  The warp is 50% pre-mercerized cotton/50% rayon chainette; weft is 100% tencel.  The fringe is hand twisted.  Size is approximately 8" wide X 45-1/2" long plus 3" hand-twisted fringe on each end for a total length of 51-1/2".  This is a shorter suit scarf with lots of drape.  Hand wash in cool water, line dry, press with a warm iron.

Topsail Island hand painted warp, handwoven cotton/rayon scarf

What a beautiful place is Topsail Island, NC.  The sea and sky colors are almost too brilliant to capture.  I hope this colorway will help you visualize just how beautiful it is with the natural sand dunes, driftwood and beautiful Atlantic Ocean.

This twill scarf was hand woven on a hand painted warp in the Topsail Island colorway with olive weft.  The warp is 50% pre-mercerized cotton/50% rayon chainette; weft is 100% tencel.  The fringe is hand twisted.  Size is approximately 8" wide X 51-1/2" long plus 5-1/2" hand-twisted fringe on each end for a total length of 62-1/2".  This is a shorter suit scarf with lots of drape.  Hand wash in cool water, line dry, press with a warm iron.

Atlantic Moonglow hand painted warp, handwoven silk/rayon scarf

The colors in this scarf (plum, Moroccan blue, blue violet and deep purple) were inspired by an evening on the beach at Topsail Island, NC.  Hope you enjoy it as much as we did the memorable evening!  It is woven in an extended, advanced broken twill that I call the Three Karat Diamond as there are 3 distinct diamond patterns across the scarf.  It was hand woven on a hand painted warp in the Atlantic Moonglow colorway with black weft.  The warp is 20% silk/80% rayon; weft is 100% tencel.  Size is approximately 8-3/4" wide X 77-1/2 long plus 5" hand-twisted fringe on each end for a total length of 87-1/2", a length that will give you lots of tying options.  Hand wash in cool water, line dry, press with a warm iron.
