Heritage Yarns Newsletter #37

New patterns from HeartStrings have arrived!

November 16, 2005

Hello everyone,

I hope you all are enjoying good knitting and weaving weather as I am.  I recently purchased a new workshop loom and have a 8/2 tencel shadow weave scarf in progress.  Look for a beginning shadow weave kit soon.  And two lace shawls are on the needles in Cloud 9.  My fingers are itching to start one of the new arrivals from HeartStrings FiberArts but I dare not until I have finished at least one!  That should speed up my knitting considerably. (-:

On to the news.

Dyeing for your knitting and weaving pleasure,

Margaret <><

HeartStrings Latest Designs

Sock Knitting Patterns from HeartStrings FiberArts          Lace Scarf Knitting Patterns - Other Interesting Shapes          Lace Scarf Knitting Patterns - Rectangular

Shown from left:  Concertina Lace Socks, The Skinny on Lace (scarf) and Reversible Lace Ladders

Concertina Lace Socks was designed to give the illusion of dimensionality, rather like the bellows on a concertina.  Suggested yarn:  Nature's Palette merino (as seen in model).

The Skinny on Lace - Here's a pattern with options for a sash, scarf and necktie.  Models are shown in linen but any laceweight/fingering weight yarn will work such as Cloud 9 from Heritage Yarns.

Reversible Lace Ladders - A simple rectangular scarf to knit in a lacy reversible stitch. Jackie E-S made the one pictured from
a small amount of merino/silk handspun. With just a little over one ounce of yarn she had remaining from another project, it makes a nice ascot-like neck scarf. Optionally, knit in Heritage Yarns Cloud 9 or hand painted 8/2 tencel.

Also new from HeartStrings - Single pattern republications of some of the designs from The Sock Calendar:  Sock Therapy, Modern Romance and Everybody Wants Sox!

What's New in Yarns

Hand painted Serenity cotton/rayon - shown in America, America     Hand painted Serenity cotton/rayon - shown in Black and Gray in a Rainbow World     Hand painted Serenity cotton/rayon - shown in Red Bluff     Hand painted Serenity cotton/rayon - shown in Topsail Island

Serenity shown from left in:  America, America, Black and Gray in a Rainbow World, Red Bluff and Topsail Island.

Serenity - is available in seven warmed up colorways in limited quantities and priced at $32/8 oz./700 yd. skein.  Undyed/natural is priced at $16.  Suggested weaving sett is 10-14 EPI.  Knitting gauge is approximately 6-1/2 st./in. over stockinette on a size 4 U.S. needle.  More colorways coming soon!

Cloud 9 - available in 14 colorways plus natural for those of you who want to dye your own.

The fiber content is 50% cotton/50% rayon with a hand as light as a cloud.  The rayon content gives the yarn just enough weight and sheen and the cotton content helps the finished item hold its shape.  The contrast of the unmercerized cotton and sheen of the rayon is quite nice and gives depth of color not seen on yarns of 100% of either fiber.

Cloud 9 is priced at $24 per 8 oz./832 yd. skein (1664 YPP).  Gauge is approximately 6-1/2 st./in. on a size 5 U.S. needle.  Suggested weaving sett is 8-12 EPI.

What's New in Painted Warps

The silk/rayon that we loved in the skein is available in six meter warps, enough for two scarves and available in eight colorways including new Choctaw Ridge and Red Bluff.  Look for pictures soon.

Pop one of these warps on the loom with no painting, no winding.  Just beam and weave!  This could almost be called a weekend project if you are a fast weaver.  The silk/rayon warps are the newest of the Heritage painted warps.  They are 6 meters long (6-1/2 yds.)  although the labels will state 6 yards.  So, there's plenty of room for two scarves and an evening bag.  Weave a scarf for yourself and one for a friend.  There are 180 ends with suggested sett of 14-18 EPI or a width of 10-12.9" inches in the reed.  Weave off with mill dyed tencel shown on the same page.  And, to make life easy, pick up a pattern while you're there.
