Patrons' Success Story
August 28, 2005
Greetings to one and all,
Friends in New Orleans and along our
beloved Mississippi Gulf Coast and all the friends from ROC Days past
come to mind during the approach of the hurricane. Know that you
each are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope we will all use this
time to think of others and to take comfort in our faith and in the work
of our hands.
It always brings me great pleasure to
see what patrons are doing. You will notice that often my last
sentence is "Enjoy - send pictures!" It is a delight when
you do. (-: This week, I would like to feature the work of a brand
new weaver. You won't believe it when you see her work!
Until we meet again,

Kathy Looper's Success Story
8/2 Tencel Tallahatchee
Bridge painted warp/Taupe 8/2 mill dyed tencel weft
When Kathy Looper of San Francisco,
CA first purchased painted warps from me, I figured she was experienced as
she bought several with choices of mill dyed tencel to go with them.
Then I became a little alarmed as she told me she was a beginning weaver.
I wanted to be sure that she had something she could use and asked her
about her experience and whether she had a teacher. I was
relieved and delighted to know that her teacher is Peggy Osterkamp. (-:
As ever, I asked if she would send
pictures so that everyone could enjoy the final appearance of the
scarf and one day recently, I was again delighted to receive several
pictures of well-woven, beautiful scarves! With such outstanding
success, I had to wonder if Kathy had been totally honest about her
level of experience!
When I responded to her note, along
with the next picture, shown above, came a very nice,
humbling note from Kathy:
Dear Margaret: I'm so happy you like it. After doing bright,
brilliant scarves that looked like jewels -- which also just
knocked your socks off -- doing this one was somewhat depressing.
Then I tried it on and looked so beautiful, had so much warmth and
depth to it, I just then and there felt that everything I make from
Heritage Yarns is a treasure! Your yarns sure do make weaving fun!
I learn so much from each one. When I first started I didn't
bother to make a sample. But now I do because I can try different
color wefts to see how they play with the warp. I learned how to
make my edges more perfect and my beats more consistent with each
scarf I made. So, they have been a wonderful inspiration for me. ...
Thank you again, Margaret, for doing such beautiful work, keeping it
affordable, and making it available through the 'net for people like me.
Sincerely, Kathy Looper
I am humbled, Kathy. It is such a privilege to be entrusted with
your time and talent. Your work is truly beautiful. You have
proven that practice and experimentation make better weaving.
Congratulations on very good work!

Silk/Rayon Warps and Pattern
From left: Blue
Bayou/Mineral Green woven by Debbie Stringer, Summer Haze/Grayed Teal and
Summer Haze/Taupe woven by Kathy Looper
Special thanks to Debbie Stringer,
friend and fellow guild member, who wove the scarf on the far left.
Debbie is the editor of a small newspaper here in Mississippi and the
person to whom I turn for art inspiration and advice. She currently
has a faux ikat warp on the loom at weaving class that is to die for.
Can't wait until she's finished so we can see pictures! (-:
Kathy, I would have never chosen the
grayed teal as weft for the Summer Haze silk/rayon warp. I learn so
much from all of you!
The silk/rayon warps are available in six
colorways and sufficient warp, six meters, to weave two scarves
approximately 8-1/2" X 65". The price is only $55.
Pick up one or more cones of tencel for $12 each.
And, finally, I have put the
finishing touches on a pattern to go with the silk/rayon warps. The
pattern has 6 options including plain weave and four four-shaft
twills, including an expanded, advancing
broken twill in 2 treadling options. Ever wanted to wear a big diamond?
Now's your chance! The name of the expanded, advancing broken twill
is Three Carat Diamond. I don't have a model of this pattern woven
yet but hope to put one on the loom next. Suggested sett is 14-20
EPI depending on weft and structure. In my opinion, the pattern is
as exciting as the Wheel of Fortune two-block eight-shaft twill
available in the tencel pattern. And, like the tencel pattern, the
silk/rayon pattern is $5.

8/2 Tencel Warps
Bird
of Paradise warp/Black mill dyed 8/2 tencel weft woven by Sandra Mayo
The 8/2 tencel warps remain popular and are
available in twelve colorways. There is ample warp for a scarf and
eveniing bag or if you are the dramatic type (who me? (-:), you may
weave a scarf 9" X 80" with a 10"-12" twisted
fringe on each end. This allows for lots of tying options.
The tencel takes up the color beautifully. Very interesting
results with different mill dyed tencels for weft.
Shown above is the Wheel of Fortune pattern, a
two-block eight-shaft twill, woven by Sandra Mayo, a friend and fellow
guild member. Optional
structures given are plain weave, two simple four-shaft twills including
Garden Maze, a combination straight and a advancing four-shaft twill, a
total of five choices of structure with suggested sett for each
structure, 20-30 EPI.
You
may purchase warp, weft and pattern separately which gives you more
options. The warp is $36, mill dyed tencel is $12 and the pattern
$5.
Farewell
Party for Silk/Rayon Skeins

Summer Haze/3 and Tallahatchee Bridge/1
Thanks
for the wonderful response to the silk/rayon skeins. Knitters,
Mary Hunt proved that three scarves can be knitted from one skein.
You may see her scarves with the yarns at
Colorway
Collections. The yarn is 20% Silk/80% Rayon, has
a wonderful drape and slight sheen and ideal for any garter stitch-based
pattern. Yardage is high (1050/8 oz.) for this laceweight yarn.
Suggested gauge is approximately 6 st/in over stockinette on a size 5
(U.S.) needle.
Weavers,
this is the same yarn as in the silk/rayon warps. There is
sufficient yardage for warp for two scarves. Suggested sett
is 14-20 EPI. Weave off with 8/2 tencel. Price is only $24.
Sorry
to see this wonderful yarn go but delighted with Cloud, available
in 14 colorways at the same low price.
