Heritage Yarns Newsletter #32
Playing with Color
July 30, 2005
Greetings!
I hope this note finds you
pursuing your love of fiber arts and color. I am in the process of 2
knitting projects, both in Cloud, the newest yarn here at Heritage Yarns
and, of course, am knitting HeartString patterns, the Triangles within
Triangles Shawl and the new Diamond Lace Dress-It-Up. I vow not to
start another one until I'm finished with at least one. Yeah,
right... (-:
On the looms: painted 8/2
tencel warps, one in Spring at Rocky Springs in the Wheel of Fortune
two-block twill and the other in a expanded four-shaft twill threading.
The latter is a sample for someone and I am looking forward to finishing
threading so that I can throw those first shots of weft. (-: I know that
every weaver can identify with the anticipation!
Until we meet again,
Margaret <><

What's New at Heritage Yarns
What would the world be without
color? There are so many ways to use it in art that it can become
somewhat confusing and a lot depends on the medium with which one works.
Color is mixed differently depending on the medium, i.e., dye, type of
dye, oils, acrylics, water color, fabric paint and even mixing as I have
with the help of some computer software.
Rules differ for various fiber
techniques as well: weft has to be considered with weaving as prints
need to be considered with quilting. Surface design requires
knowing what color interaction is going to take place when one color is
laid on top of another. Pattern weaving shows up better with a
blending of color or tone-on-tone, if not a solid. Lace knitting
shows up better in light colorways and/or ones with similar values.
I've been in the process of
developing some color tools on the website and I have just linked it to
the main menu on the 'welcome' page. Let me know what you think of
the page and ideas you might have to add to it so that it will be
beneficial to others.

Peaks and
Valleys knitted in Spring at Rocky Springs 52% Cotton/48% Rayon
The Heritage Yarns collection of
knitting patterns from HeartStrings FiberArts continues to grow as they
continue to grow in popularity. Designer, Jackie E-S, continues to
strive to offer skill-building patterns that are well written even for the
novice lace knitter.
Among the newest is the Peaks and
Valleys Scarf shown above, now in a nice, printed version. This
scarf was knitted in a yarn that used to be a best seller here at Heritage
Yarns. It is the 52% cotton/48% rayon, a very versatile yarn
well-suited for knitting and weaving, both warp and weft. The
price of raw goods continued to escalate until I felt it prudent
to stop offering it. However, it seems there is no replacement
for this wonderful yarn. It is a very smooth, soft yarn and
larger in grist than some I offer. Yards per pound is approximately
1400 or 700/8 oz. skein. I would appreciate your opinion and have
set up a poll at
Hand
Painted
Yarns for you to participate. I value your opinion and like
offering yarns that you love.
