Heritage Yarns Newsletter #31

June 3, 2005

The good ole' summertime is the perfect time for knitting or weaving with cotton chenille.

It would make a beautiful, lightweight summer shawl knitted alone.  Simply cast on 3 with large needles, knit in garter stitch, increasing one in the back stitch at the beginning and ending of every row.  One skein of cotton chenille shown at Hand Painted Yarns will make a very large shawl or cover-up for the beach.

Own a triangular loom?  Combine cotton chenille with Tropical Wave or rayon boucle for a super-bulky yarn.  Or for a little extra glitz, add some cotton/metallic.  You will need from 400-800 yards for a poncho or large shawl, depending on the size you choose.  A few of these yarns are *on sale* and located at Sale Bin.  Others are located at Hand Painted Yarns.

Colorway/yarn suggestions:

Atlantic Moonglow, Majesty or Blueberry Hill cotton chenille/Deep Purple Tropical Wave or Deep Purple rayon boucle

The Days of Wine and Roses cotton chenille/The Days of Wine and Roses or Plum Parfait Tropical Wave

Jewels are a Girl's Best Friend cotton chenille/Jewels are a Girl's Best Friend Tropical Wave

Atlantic Moonglow cotton chenille/Plum Parfait Tropical Wave

Majesty Alpine cotton/Deep Purple Tropical Wave

Holly Jolly Christmas cotton chenille/Holly Berry cotton/metallic

Own a floor loom?

Cotton chenille is an excellent choice for beach or bath towels.  Put on a warp of 8/2 tencel shown at Mill Dyed Yarns and use cotton chenille for the weft.  The shine of the tencel and the unmercerized cotton chenille will be beautiful with very good absorbency.

Whether you are a knitter, weaver or crocheter, cotton chenille is a good choice.

As always, I appreciate you and am happy to help you with yarn and color suggestions.
