Heritage Yarns Newsletter #3

May 13, 2001

Hi everyone!

I hope your summer is going well and full of vacation plans.  We are gearing up for a few trips soon so if I don't answer your email right away, I will as soon as I return.  Travel dates are June 26-July 1 and possibly July 4-8.  Let me know if you will be needing anything before that time so I can be working toward it.  Enjoy the summer.

Best regards,
Margaret Pittman

New additions

I know you all know what it's like to move something around in your house.  It causes you to move something else which causes you to move something else, etc., etc.  Same thing with a website when "what's new" isn't new anymore. <g> This has caused a little delay in the release of the newsletter but (whew!) I think everything is in its place!  Let me know if you can't find something or have a particular interest that you don't see.  I'll try to get it for you, make adjustments in colors, etc.  Also let me know if you find any broken or slow-loading links.  It will be taken care of.

I incorrectly stated last month that you would find the new colorways in a month or so at Yarn and Roving Colorways.  Well, now there are over 30 colorways in a dozen different yarns which makes for a page slow in downloading.  The colorways you are familiar with are now located on 2 pages:  Old Favorites and the Mississippi Delta River Collection.  The new collection is announced below and on a different page.

Knitting patterns are on a page all their own now at Knitting Patterns.

You will find most of the commercially-dyed yarns including perle cotton, mohair and the 30/2/4 Tencel at Mill Dyed Yarns.  Apart eyelash, that we in Mississippi call "the pet" is located on a page especially for knitting and weaving kits by the same name.

As you can tell the site has had lots of changes but I believe you will find it easier to get around and to browse.

New tencel in colors

The new 10/2 commercial tencel is here and available in 8 oz. skeins at $16. The new colors are: Persian Red, Moroccan Blue and Tussah Silk.  See these and the coordinating hand dyed 10/2 tencel at Mill Dyed Yarns.

New Colorways

I am constantly looking for color inspiration.  Color is always on my mind as I listen to music, as I listen to your requests for color, read the fashion color forecasts and also see beautiful new commercially-dyed yarns like the new 10/2 Tencel colors.  A few of you have requested a purple and blue-green combination, more blue and green combinations.  Inspired by Memorial Day and Independence Day, the new collection is called America The Beautiful Collection with emphasis on the South.  This collection may be seen at America the Beautiful Collection.  You'll find a purple and blue green combination and a blue and green combination as well as my interpretation of some of the new colors  forecasted for 2001 like Purple Mysteria, Cityscape Gray, Industrial Taupe, Straw, Glass Block, Cypress, Storm, Chocolate Raisin, Apricot Ice, Vin Rouge, Latte, Java Bean and an earthy soft red plus colors very close to Persian Red and Moroccan Blue.  Take a look and let me know what your color inspirations are.

Inspiring Designs-New Photos

A few folks have sent in some photographs of beautiful new creations.  Be inspired at Inspiring Designs.

Frequently Asked Question

There have been many questions and comments lately on lists that I am a member of regarding bleeding of yarns, dye coming off on your hands, etc.  Cellulose fibers (cottons, rayons, etc.) are dyed with fiber-reactive dye which is not an exhaust dye like acids for protein fibers, i.e., there is a lot of washout. *However* - this is not a bad sign.  The more intense the color, the more bleeding you will have.  It does not in any way effect the color as it is called fugitive or excess dye. Wash your item separately in the washing machine depending on the construction of the garment, etc., just like you would any dark, commercially-dyed fabric.  Of course, if you have used fringe, hand wash or dry clean only.
