Heritage Yarns Newsletter #22
April 3, 2004
Hi
everyone,
It was so nice to see so many of you at Southeast Fiber Forum. We
had a great time. Only wish there had been time to participate in
more visiting other than at the booth. Don't forget that Convergence is fast approaching. For further
information, visit the link above.
Happy Spring!

New Knitting Patterns
Menu
The knitting patterns page has needed revamping for quite awhile. As
more new patterns have come in recently the download time has been
greater. My thoughts have been that shopping might be more
pleasurable to shop by designer or by pattern type. Hopefully, very
soon I will get some yardage
charts up to assist you in yarn selection. Meanwhile, you may go to
the same location at
Knitting
Patterns to view the different galleries. Let me know your
thoughts as to how I may improve your shopping experience.
New Knitting Patterns
From Jackie E-S:
I am always delighted to add patterns to my growing collection from master
knitter, Jackie E-S. These are no different than her many other
patterns in
that they are well-written and very easy to follow for most novice
knitters and challenging enough for the experienced. Visit the new
gallery page at
Knitting Patterns.
New are Ethereal Fichu, Shetland Lace Patterned Faroese Shawl and
Triangles within Triangles Shawl.
Any of these would be lovely knitted in 8/2 tencel. Yardage is 1680
skeins per 8 oz. skein or cone, making for a very affordable project and
the
advantage of a very cool fiber to knit during the summer. 8/2 tencel
has all the good properties of rayon, such as sheen and drape and it is
much
stronger than rayon when wet so no fear when it is blocking time.
From Ann Norling:
Lots of new things! One of the many nice features of this group of
patterns is that they are multi-gauged. Who can't use patterns like
this as a way to
use up stash yarns or as an excuse to collect them? <g>
New to this group is the One-Piece Vest (formerly known as the Weekend
Vest), Crib-Blanket-Afghan II, Striped Baroque Scarf, a Top-Down Poncho
(picture available soon) and the Adult Basic Knitted Vest.
Along with these fine patterns from Ann Norling are jewelry findings for
the new fiber necklaces plus purse snap frames to go with the mushroom
purse
pattern.
Now, I am indecisive as to what to knit next. I feel like a kid in a
toy store. <g>
Honeycomb-Fashion Treadling Option
Learned from Barbara Miller - my
overshot mentor
This is a fun treadling option to use on a lot of threadings but I love it
treadled on a overshot threading. Cells are woven in a finer thread;
may I suggest 8/2 tencel? And the outline should 4 to 5 times larger
than the cell thread. A suggestion would be to use black 8/2 tencel
for warp and ply the same in about 4 or 5 strands for the outline.
For a more interesting fabric, use 3 or 5 (or other odd number) bright
colors of 8/2 tencel for the 4 blocks of cells. The colors will show
up in different blocks. This makes a great purse fabric. It
may need lining for stability and to protect the floats on the reverse
side.
Pattern Blocks or Cells
A - 1, 3 & 4 (no 2)/1, 2 & 4 (no 3)
B - 1, 2 & 4 (no 3)/1, 2 & 3 (no 4)
C - 1, 2 & 3 (no 4)/2, 3 & 4 (no 1)
D - 2, 3 & 4 (no 1)/1, 3 & 4 (no 2)
Weave as follows:
1 & 3 - Outline
2 & 4 - Outline
Block A (from above.) Repeat 5 times (or no less than 3 times.)
2 & 4 - Outline
1 & 3 - Outline
Block C (from above.) Repeat 5 times (or no less than 3 times.)
Take-up in both warp and weft are great in this treadling order.
Change color as you change cells. Alternate treadling of 2 blocks,
all 4 or A & C; then B & D. Try 3 cell colors on 4 blocks.
Try 1 shot of tabby rather than 2 before and after cells.
