Heritage Yarns Newsletter #1

March 13, 2001

Hi!  Hope you are having a great new year full of fiber fun!

This is the first Heritage newsletter of what, hopefully, will be many more.

In This Issue:

  • Improved Site
  • Hand Painted 10/2 Tencel Skeins
  • Mill Dyed 30/2/4 Tencel Solids
  • Weaving Kits
  • Knitting Kits
  • New Knitting Patterns
  • Shipping/Contact Information

My husband, Don, and I have recently reworked the website to make it easier to get around in.  As promised for some time, the website now features Don's talent at piano.  About Heritage is a little slower loading due to the type pictures displayed there of Don and friends but I think ((-: worth the wait.  Other new additions are a much improved Shopping/Ordering Information page; Knitting Needs page and a guest book.  Don is due the credit for taking most of the pictures as well as his invaluable computer expertise.

Hand Painted 10/2 Tencel Skeins

Tencel is the newest fiber in 30 years and is taking dye brilliantly!  It has all the good qualities of rayon - nice drape and sheen - but stronger than rayon.  The hand is that of silk.  The 10/2 tencel is 4200 ypp or approximately 2100 yards per 8 oz.  Shrinkage always occurs in dyeing but less in tencel than other fibers.  Suggested sett is 24-30 EPI.  It is available in all the Heritage colorways for $24/8 oz. skein.  Check out the colorways at Old Favorites, Mississippi Delta River Collection,  America the Beautiful Collection and the Tone-on-Tone Collection.

Mill Dyed 30/2/4 Tencel Solids

Black, tussah, turf green and aster purple are the first 4 colors out in this great yarn.  In this shipment the black, turf green and  aster purple are put up on 8 oz. cones at 3150 ypp, 1575 yards/8 oz. cone, and retails at $17.50.  The tussah is on 9.2 oz. cones and has approximately 1812 yards/9.2 oz. cone and retails for $20.15.  Pictures are at Mill Dyed Yarns.

Weaving Kits

Log Cabin Scarf Kit

This kit consists of 2-4 oz. skeins of 5/2 perle cotton in many color choices.  Choose any 2 for a "one-of-a-kind" scarf.  Click on Mill Dyed Yarns to view colors.  Price of $15 includes the pattern.

Knitting Kits

Triangular Scarf Kit

The triangular scarf kit consists of one ball of Apart, a 100% nylon "eyelash" yarn that has the hand of chinchilla, plus a pattern to knit a "skinny" triangular scarf that ties easily around your neck.  Current colors are fuchsia/black and denim/black.  These are in short supply so get 'em while you can at $12/kit.  Size 10-1/2 U.S. needle recommended.  See pictures at Knitting Kits.

Market Bag

Get ready to shop at Southeast Fiber Forum with a quick knitted market bag. One four oz. skein of perle cotton/$7.50 per skein will make a large bag.

3-to-2 Any Gauge Sweater

Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer gets my vote for writing patterns that are easy to follow.  The 3-to-2 Any Gauge Sweater is just one of many of the Heartstrings patterns available to you at Knitting Patterns.  If you start in the next few weeks, you can finish a sweater by spring!  Custom design your sweater using any yarn, any sleeve length in any size.  The pattern sells for $6 and is loaded with many options such as gauge, size and sleeve length.  Two 8 oz. skeins of a fingering weight or sport weight yarn will be sufficient to knit a sleeveless style from size 38-42.  (More or less will be needed depending on size and sleeve variation.)  Use the extra for sleeve variation or for a scarf.  Recommended yarns are:

Sport weight

Southland Cotton at 14 WPI            Gauge = 6 st./in./Size needles
Appr. 515 yds./8 oz.                        $31/8 oz. skein

Fingering weight

52% cotton/48% rayon at 18WPI        Gauge = 6-1/2 st./in./Size 4 needles
Appr. 700 yds./8 oz.                            $28/8 oz. skein

Note:  These yardages are approximate as there is always shrinkage in dyeing.  Order sufficient amounts to insure same dyelot.

Choose your colorway at Old Favorites, Mississippi Delta River Collection, America the Beautiful Collection or Tone-on-Tone Collection.

Knitting Patterns

I am always happy to have more of the Heartstring patterns by Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer.  In stock and not pictured at this time are the Soft Cables Mobius, Loop-D-Loop, Spiral Nebula shawl and the Troika Wrap-around Shawl.  In addition to her lovely patterns, there are 2 patterns by Muench for use with your handspun yarns, The Puzzle Jacket and The Pyramid Jacket.

View pictures at Knitting Patterns.
