The Skinny on Lace - #A87
This is
perhaps the most fun scarf I have knit in a long time as it is narrow
and takes very little yarn. Chevrons and stylized fleur-de-lis
make up this very easy pattern. Gift time always comes on us
before we know it and several of these in the "gift closet" would be
nice to have on hand.
The
Skinny on Lace pattern is written with options for a sash, necktie and
long wrap scarf. So, with very little yarn, lace weight to
sport/DK yarn, you will have several items on hand for gifts in a
little of no time. Great for stash yarns and high-end specialty
yarns as it takes so little yardage - as little as 110 yds. for a
necktie!
- Sash: 135 yards fingering weight yarn or equivalent such as size 5
crochet thread for blocked measurements of 4" x 60", size 6
US/4.0mm.
- Scarf: 250 yards sport or DK weight yarn for blocked measurements of
4½" x 80", size 7 U.S./4.5mm.
- Necktie: 110 yards laceweight yarn or equivalent such as size 10
crochet thread for blocked measurements of 2¼" x 40", size
1 U.S./2.25mm.
From HeartStrings designer, Jackie
E-S:
The Skinny on Lace long scarf version
shown on the left was knitted in Heritage Yarns Serenity cotton/rayon in the
colorway,
Atlantic Moonglow. Serenity comes in a huge skein 8 ounce skein, so there
is plenty to make looooong scarves like this one (8½ feet!) and still
have lots of yarn left over to make something else. I love how this
is scarf is extra-long and can be wrapped and tied in so many ways.

Easy Asymmetry
Wrap - #H01
What a fun,
easy shawl! Note how the variegated color swirls with the pattern.
This pattern works well with "stash" yarns as it takes so little of each
one. This wrap knits naturally on the diagonal in a very easy,
one-row pattern. Choose harmonizing colors and different textures
for lots of color and texture interest.
Optionally,
purchase the
Easy Asymmetry Wrap Knitting Kit as the shawl in the pattern.
The three
yarns used in the model are from the Heritage Yarns hand painted
collections. The fiber, weight and sheen are a little different in
each so that the dye take-up varies, giving added depth of texture, color
and sheen.
- Hand dyed
Fringe Benefit 100% rayon chainette
(color/Plum)
- Hand
painted Cloud 9 50% cotton/50% rayon textured yarn (colorway/Atlantic Moonglow)
- Hand
painted Premier 5/2 100% cotton (colorway/Atlantic Moonglow).
In addition
to the colorway combination shown, there are six additional colorways
from which to choose.
The Easy
Asymmetry Wrap can be worn in a number of ways. Have fun knitting
and wearing it!
Sized for Small-Medium [Large-Extra
Large]. Planned finished measurement: Length - 25 [29 ½]"; total
width of panels as measured along diagonals - 63 [77] ". Allow 350
[500] yards of each of three different yarns in fingering to light worsted
weight. This wrap is easily adjusted to desired width and length with
yardage adjustment. 4 ¼ stitches/inch, size U.S. 8/5 mm needles suggested. Written stitch instructions.

Elegantly Simple Triangle Shawl - #A33
The
Elegantly Simple Triangle Shawl is a very easy, first lace shawl and
because it is easy was featured in a knitalong in 2006.
Cloud 9 was the featured yarn but all types of yarns were
used as gauge is not extremely important with this shawl.
The shawl is
knit in a lovely variation of Shetland feather and fan stitch and appears to
much more complicated than it really is. Knitting starts at the lower
point and increases in width as you knit. So, you can knit a lacy,
triangle scarf or a huge shawl by adjusting yardage and needle size.
It is a very
flattering shawl and can be worn in a variety of ways including using the
point as a self-made collar or point down in back. Or wear with one
point thrown over the shoulder with a lovely pin to hold it in place.
A smaller version would work well as an ascot.
A very fine yarn is recommended
but all types of yarns may be used. Yardage required varies
from 200 yards for a neck scarf of 32" at the widest point to 1000
yards for a larger wrap of 72". Size 5 U.S. (3.75 mm) needles
are recommended. Gauge = 6 stitches per inch over pattern stitch.
Version in the
first two pictures shown
was knit with one skein of
Cloud 9 in
the
Bird of Paradise colorway. This yarn is ideal for you if you
want the stretch of wool, cool hand of cotton and sheen and drape of
rayon.
The
Elegantly Simple Triangular Shawl Knitting Kit is available in several
colorways and includes the pattern and one skein of Cloud 9.
The shawlette
shown on bottom left was knit during the
Elegantly
Simple Triangular Shawl Knit Along in
hand painted 8/2 Tencel in the Blue Bayou
colorway.

Spiral Nebula
- #A71 This is
another very easy lace shawl that I think you will enjoy knitting.
Make good use of a hand painted or fancy yarn with this easy pattern.
The fabric is garter stitch based with yarnovers following in the path of
the spiral created by increases.
The Spiral Nebula, unlike some
shawls, stays on your shoulders for care-free wearing. It can be knit
in any weight and yarn size and worn in a multitude of ways.
You can knit the Spiral Nebula to any length you desire based on yardage.
Instructions are given for three general yarn categories: bulky,
medium and fine gauge. Yardage and needles vary according to the yarn
chosen. You can knit a 36" length in fine weight yarn or 2250
yards. A 36" length in bulky weight yarn requires 1575 yards.
My shoulder wrap is on the far
right and was knit with one strand of Day's End hand painted 8/2 tencel and
one strand of mill dyed eggplant 8/2 tencel available in the
Spiral Nebula Shawl Knitting Kit. The kit contains a skein of hand
painted and a cone of 8/2 tencel, the space-saver version of the Spiral
Nebula and an organza-trimmed, reusable drawstring project bag.

Troika
Wrap-Around Shawl - #A41
If you want
to have some real fun, you will love this shawl! I was hesitant to
knit it as I had never switched yarns from row to row. Was I ever
in for a pleasant surprise?! As you can tell, I couldn't quit
knitting! It is extra-long and dramatic and basically, my winter
"coat" here in Mississippi. It wears equally as well with a formal
as it does with a pair of jeans.
The shaping
is Faroese style as shown in the picture on the upper right. The giant
"wings" formed by the shaping keeps the shawl on your shoulders and provides
lot of opportunities for different tying methods such as shown in the second
photograph where I have it tied underneath the back of the shawl and around
my waist. This shawl is versatile enough that I often will wear it on
cool evenings for just lounging around. It doesn't get in the way of
my knitting! <g>
For a shawl in 34" length, you will need
approximately 600 yards of each of three different yarns (or combination
of yarns) in sport to worsted-weight. Choose yarns with varied
textures and sheen for lots of interest.
Each of the three yarns are knit for one row each in garter stitch, then
repeated, thus giving you lots of color and textural interaction.
Size 10 and 10-1/2 circular needles in 29"-32" lengths or size
to produce a supple fabric in garter stitch in your chosen yarns are
recommended.
For my shawl,
I used a skein of
Serenity in
Atlantic Moonglow, 3 skeins of cotton/metallic,
that I no longer carry, and a skein of mohair that followed me home from
Convergence. For a shawl with a lot of interest, drape and sheen, you
might like to try a combination of
Serenity (matte, sheen and drape),
Fringe Benefit (high sheen and drape) and
Coconut Boucle or
Cloud 9, cotton/rayon textured yarns.

Scarf
knitted by Jackie E-S using the stitch panel from the Comfortghan
|
|
Warm Hearts Comfortghan - #KH06
Designed
by Laura Andersson of Kuan Yin Knitting. This makes a nice blanket
to snuggle up on the couch or as a lap blanket. Jackie E-S took
the pattern a step further and knit a scarf from the stitch panel.
The pattern
stitch is a little different on each side - both pleasing. So, it's
like getting two patterns in one or three when you count the possibilities
of the pattern stitch!
Finished size after blocking is 45" X
52". Yarn and needles: Machine washable worsted weight
yarn - 1200 yds., size 9 U.S. (5.5 mm) or size needed to obtain planned
gauge. Gauge: 4 sts./in. in Warm Hearts stitch pattern after
washed and dried. Optional: 15 stitch markers, one of which is
a different color. Pictured model was knitted by Rachel Wilson with
Brown Sheep Lambs Pride Superwash, 100% wool machine washable, color
Serendipity Turquoise, 100g/200 yds. per skein, 7 skeins.

|
Shaped Tee
with Collar - #W28
This is a
simple garter stitch based T-top is easy enough for the advanced
beginner. The asymmetrical split collar and non-boxy short sleeves
give this straight-bodied, flattering sweater added style.
Dress it up even further with a hand painted, variegated yarn and let the
yarn do the designing for you.
The pattern calls for worsted weight or use two strands of finer yarn to
come up to an equivalent thickness. Yardage needed - 925-1200.
Gauge is 5 stitches per inch over stockinette.
An
interesting combination might be hand painted
Premier 5/2 cotton or
Coconut Boucle, both with a matte finish, combined with a complementary
color of
8/2 mill dyed Tencel with a high sheen. On the left are just
a few color ideas of how you can create a sweater that is uniquely yours.
Suggested needle size 7 U.S. (4.5 mm) or size to
obtain planned gauge plus size 4 or 3 sizes smaller than size needed for
gauge in 16" and 24" length circular needles. An extra
needle in larger size is needed for joining shoulders.
Skill level:
Advanced beginner - basic skills for cast on, bind off, knit, purl, slip,
pick up, increase, and knitting in the round on circular needles.
